The Lewis family came to Sweet Springs around early 1700's, probably
drawn to the area by the abundant springs, some of which were reputed
to have healing properties. William Lynn, son of John, founder of Staunton
in Augusta County, Virginia, built two or three smaller houses or cabins in
the area before he built the ancestral home, Lynnside.  Gutted by fire in 1933
and partially restored in the 1950's after removing a half story from the
building, it still stands empty, almost devoid of its former glory An oil
painting, done by artist Nora Houston, niece of Florence Dooley Lewis, is
cabinall that is left to indicate what this fine old mansion looked like before the fire
.
